Abdominal Pain Q & A
What causes abdominal pain?
Abdominal pain can arise from any of the structures and organs in your abdomen. As a result, your pain could have many possible causes.
Dr. Hiba frequently treats painful problems such as:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Crohn’s disease
- Gastric ulcers
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Ulcerative colitis
- Liver disease
- Pancreatitis
- Colitis
- Gastritis
- Cholecystitis
- Gastroparesis
- Diverticulitis
- Kidney stones
- Gallbladder stones
Cancers of the stomach, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas may also cause abdominal pain.
When should I get medical care for abdominal pain?
Call Dr. Hiba immediately if you have severe abdominal pain together with one or more of the following symptoms:
- Fever
- Blood in your bowel movements
- Ongoing constipation
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Abdominal swelling
- Yellow-looking skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Tenderness when touching your abdomen
Though it’s not as urgent, you should also schedule an appointment if you have mild pain that lasts several days, doesn’t improve with at-home care, or gets worse.
How is abdominal pain diagnosed?
Dr. Hiba reviews your medical history, examines your abdomen, and learns details such as:
- The type of pain (sharp, dull, cramping, burning, constant, occasional)
- The location of the pain
- Whether your pain gets better or worse after eating
- Whether your pain eases after a bowel movement
- How long the pain has lasted
- If you have any of the symptoms listed above
Dr. Hiba may get enough information to make a diagnosis, or he may need to run blood, urine, or stool tests. In some cases, you may need X-rays or a CT scan. If these tests don’t reveal your diagnosis, the next step is endoscopy to examine the tissues inside your gastrointestinal tract.
Throughout your exam and the process of diagnosing the cause of your pain, Dr. Hiba uses PatientPoint® tablets. These tablets are equipped with images and information that he can use to show you the problem and explain the possible causes.
How is abdominal pain treated?
Your treatment is always individualized and based on the cause of your pain. Since abdominal pain can come from so many conditions, it’s impossible to give you a full rundown on the type of treatment you may need.
However, your treatment always starts with the most conservative options. For some, Dr. Hiba may focus on medications and dietary changes designed to relieve the symptoms. Other conditions may need an in-office or minimally invasive procedure to repair the problem.
If you have ongoing or severe abdominal pain, don’t wait to schedule an appointment. Call Premier Gastroenterology or request an appointment online today.
